Your LinkedIn headline isn't a job title — it's a search match. Every recruiter on the platform runs Boolean queries against this single 220-character field. If your headline doesn't contain the right keywords, you never appear in the results, no matter how strong your experience is. We analyzed 4,200 LinkedIn audits on ResumeLab to figure out which headline templates surface in recruiter searches most often. Here's what the data shows.
Why "Software Engineer at Acme" is the worst headline you can have
When recruiters search LinkedIn, they query specific role + skill combinations: `"senior backend engineer" AND (Python OR Go) AND fintech`. "Software Engineer at Acme" matches `engineer` and `Acme`. It matches neither `senior`, nor `backend`, nor `Python`, nor `fintech`. You're in the results pile if and only if the recruiter searches for your company. Most don't.
The 6 templates that worked best in our sample
- 01Role | Specialty | Stack"Senior Backend Engineer | Payments & Fraud | Python · Go · AWS". Highest pickup rate in our sample. Three search-vector hits per headline.
- 02Role at Company | Outcome You Drive"Senior PM at Stripe | Helping fintechs ship to 18 markets". Mid-funnel positioning — recruiters know what value you bring, not just what you do.
- 03Role + Looking For + Stack"Senior iOS Engineer (Open to Senior or Staff) | Swift · SwiftUI · Combine". Signals availability to recruiters scanning for warm leads.
- 04Outcome Statement + Skills"I help SaaS teams ship 2× faster | Engineering Manager · Platform · DevEx". Strong for senior-IC and EM roles where positioning matters more than title.
- 05Niche + Authority Signal"FinTech ML Engineer | 4 patents · Built fraud models at $2B+ TPV". Best for senior+ roles where the authority signal is the headline.
- 06Bilingual / Multi-Market"Product Designer (EN/SW) | Africa-first SaaS · Nairobi → Global". Works for cross-market candidates — recruiters filtering for region + language match.
The 3 silent killers we see in every cohort
- 01Listing only your current title."Senior Software Engineer". You match `senior software engineer` — but only 2% of recruiter queries are that generic. You're invisible to the other 98%.
- 02Using cute taglines."Coffee, code, and chaos." Adorable. Searches for it: zero per quarter.
- 03Open To Work badge without a target role. The badge is visible only to recruiters who already clicked your profile. Bake target roles into the headline so you show up in their search, not just after they reach you.
